From time to time in Bangkok you see some odd signage…strange sentences or weird words or context that’s really inappropriate. Usually it’s an innocent mistake or a spelling error or an unfamiliarity with the English language, or cultural ignorance. But sometimes you have to wonder if it’s some weird amalgamation of all of the above.
A friend took this picture at the mall the other day that pretty much says it all…sort of.
I think it says “We are not against rape wern notaginst rappersuit“? Is there a message here I’m not seeing? Do the letters spell out something else that I’m blind to, just like “Sean Connery” in the below clip from my favorite SNL skit of all time?
Hi Greg,
There’s a rap group with the improbable name Bones Thugs-n-Harmony who, in one of their songs, samples a recording of an American baptist minister saying “We are not against rap, we are not against rappers” – I’m assuming it’s a badly spelled reference to that rap song. Although, to be honest, when I first saw it I thought it was about middle class cookers (I am not against Aga).
Hey Antonia, thanks! I think that’s it, although a very poor transcription of those lyrics! I’m far too uncool to know some Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. 🙂
Hmmmm… You think they would double check with Google translate at least, eh?
Today I saw someone wearing a t-shirt saying, “The darker your tee, the drighter you are”… Even if brighter was spelt right, the girl was wearing a white t-shirt, so it really defeated the purpose! Unless she wanted a response of, “Oooo she dark!” But I doubt it somehow! Hehe!
